How can I get a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) check for my vehicle?

All vehicles purchased out of state (that require a registration) and are 2001 or newer must have a VIN check prior to being registered in Rhode Island.  The VIN check is done to verify the paperwork is correct and the vehicle is not stolen.  The Foster Police Department conducts VIN checks daily.  Walk ins are accepted (an officer may not be available) or call 397-3317 to see if an officer is available to conduct the check.

You will need the following when you respond to the police station: the vehicle, the Title to the vehicle, Bill of Sale, odometer miles, and the name and address of the person registering the vehicle.  A fee of $10.00 is required and can be paid by cash or check.  The check is made payable to the Town of Foster.  When the VIN check is completed you will receive a VIN form that you MUST take to the registry.  The vehicle cannot be registered without this form.  For any further questions, you can contact the Rhode Island Registry of Motor Vehicles or access their website.

Proof of Ownership:  A title is needed for a VIN check.  If you own the vehicle, bring the original title and the vehicle.  If there is a lien on the vehicle, bring a copy of the title and the vehicle.  There is a $10.00 fee which can be paid by check or cash.  Walk ins are accepted (an officer may not be available) or call 397-3317 to see if an officer is available to conduct the check.
