Emergency Contacts for Business Owners

If you own a business in town, you should contact the dispatch center and advise the dispatcher of who to notify in case of an emergency with your business when it is closed. This information will be placed on file. You can call 397-3317 and relay the information to any dispatcher.

Emergency Contacts for Vacant Houses

If you are going away on vacation (for any length of time), renovating a house or in the process of selling one (and no one will be living there), you can file a 'Vacant House Report'  and a police officer will check your residence while your house is vacant. You can respond to the police department to file a report or call in the information. You can call anytime at 397-3317 and the dispatcher on duty will take the information.

Guidelines When Calling 9-1-1

When you call 9-1-1, give the operator as much information as possible. When the operator transfers you to the appropriate police department, the dispatcher will ask you a variety of questions depending on the type of call. For example: when describing a vehicle that is operating in a dangerous manner on the highway, tell the call taker what kind of vehicle, color, distinguishing features, license plate number, description of driver, direction of travel, landmarks, if possible. Call Takers are trained to ask specific questions for specific situations.

If your emergency is such that you can only dial 9-1-1 but not talk, the 9-1-1 dispatcher will transfer your call to the police department and the police will send a police officer to the address from where the call originated. If you hang up the phone because you dialed 9-1-1 by mistake, a police officer will respond to your home and verify the call was accidental.

Detail Officer Requests

If you need a detail officer or information regarding one, please call Foster Police at 397-3317 and ask for the detail officer. If the detail officer is unavailable, the dispatcher will obtain the information and forward it to the Officer In Charge. There is a four hour minimum for details.
